When Italy entered World War I, some “Italians” had already been at war for a year, including many residents of Trieste drafted into the Austrian Army in the 97th Infantry, which was practically wiped out in the Battle of Leopoli in September 1914.

After the Italian victory, Trieste and the whole Istrian peninsula were annexed to Italy. Trieste has very ancient origins and there are traces of the Illyrians as early as the 4th century B.C. The city became Roman and, in later centuries, it was a Byzantine city, then one of the strongholds of the Venetian Republic. Now it is a cosmopolitan, multiethnic city. Its vicinity to Slovenia and Croatia somewhat limits the use of gas as fuel, however it is an important alternative in this part of Italy too.
