Gas emissions: who goes up and who goes down

Eurostat noted this, highlighting that last year ‘clean’ electricity exceeded the 1 million Gigawatt/hour threshold, almost 30,000 GWh more than the production obtained from fossil fuels. This figure is affected by the influence of the pandemic: last year the production of electricity from fossil sources fell by 9.8% compared to 2019, reaching its lowest level since 1990. In this context, we collected the first data on cars’ gas emissions. According to data released by the European Environment Agency (EEA), in 2019 the average emissions of new cars registered in the European Union, Iceland, Norway and the United Kingdom were 122.3 gCO2 /km This figure is lower compared to the 2015-2019 target of 130 gCO2 /km but well above the 2020-2024 target of 95 gCO2 /km. 2020’s provisional data show a change of trend. Average emissions registered were 107.8 grams of CO2 per kilometer (gCO2 /km). This is 14.5 g (12%) less than in 2019 and is the first decrement observed since 2016.
