Costa Crociere took possession of the Costa Smeralda, a new cruise ship powered by liquefied natural gas, from the Meyer naval shipyard in Turku (Finland).
This is the first ship of the fleet to use LNG, in port and at sea, but it will not be the only one: it is part of an expansion plan of seven new ships of which five will use this low environmental impact fuel.
Costa Smeralda is a traveling smart city. A few examples: the daily requirement of water is satisfied
by its desalinization system directly transforming sea water, energy consumption is reduced to a minimum thanks to LED lights and the shape of the hull is designed to reduce friction with the water.
