Center airbag also in Europe

Safety

ZF, a German multinational company, has developed a new airbag that protects from lateral impacts.

ZF logoThis system, that will shortly enter into production, consists in an air cushion that opens up and inflates on the inner side of the driver’s seat.

It has been designed to protect head, shoulders and chest and won’t allow excessive movements of the body in case of lateral impact. It will also prevent side head impact between front passengers.

The component manufacturer has developed this airbag with a vision of the new protocols that EuroNCAP (the European program assessing the security of new models through crash tests) will introduce in the 2020s and will further tighten lateral impact tests.

Therefore, the central air cushion is essential to get the 5-star maximum score. The system will also be useful in case of overturning by keeping the occupant firmly in place and therefore injuries will be much more limited.
