Legend has it that the church was built in honor of an icon brought from Constantinople by a pilgrim around the year 1100, on his return from the Holy Land. For centuries the people of Bologna have venerated the image of the Madonna with Child that protects the city also against the ravages of time. Bologna and Istanbul also have something else in common: they are the two cities in Turkey and Italy with the highest percentage of gas-fueled cars.
