Hydrogen engine for Toyota

Yamaha Motor has been commissioned by Toyota Motor Corporation to develop a 5 L V8 engine fueled only by hydrogen for the automotive sector.

In Japan, in a joint announcement made the past November, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Subaru Corporation, Toyota Motor Corporation, Mazda Motor Corporation and Yamaha Motor declared to collaborate for the search of new solutions which will lead to the expansion of the range of fuels available for internal combustion engines. During the same occasion, Toyota presented to the public its new hydrogen V8 Yamaha engine. The power train is based on the 5-liter engine used in the prestigious Lexus RC F sports coupe, with modifications to injectors, cylinder heads, intake manifold and more. It develops up to 450 HP at 6,800 rpm, maximum torque 540 NM at 3,600 rpm. Among the aspects appreciated by the developing team, the Kanno Seino characteristics, synonymous with exciting, exhilarating performance. An example is the known high frequency exhaust harmonic produced by the engine’s 8 into 1 exhaust manifold.
