Pollution and traffic the most concern of the Italians

ISTAT just issued its report for 2014 on the Quality of the Urban Environment, which indicates a general improvement in the air quality, particularly in the cities of northern Italy.

The levels of certain pollutants are still high, however, and in many major cities there are serious peaks in the hourly or daily averages. Noise pollution is getting worse: it exceeded the limits in over half the controls.

For the third year in a row there was a decrease in what is, however, a very high rate of motorization, while the sign is once again positive for the number of motor vehicles in circulation and for that of new registrations. The demand for public transportation at the local level, which dropped considerably in the three-year period 2011-2013 is starting to grow again. As regards urban waste, sorted collection is increasing but still has a long way to go before it reaches the targets set for that sector. Domestic use of electricity is down and the use of natural gas is also lower, while productions from renewable sources are growing, as is the efficient use of energy by the municipal offices. Domestic consumption of drinking water has also decreased, despite the still high levels of leakage in the distribution network.
