Since November 2020, in the cyclic maintenance workshops of Trenitalia, in Rimini, the conversion works to methane and liquid bio-methane for two historic diesel-powered rail cars are underway with the collaboration of the national companies specialized in small scale LNG Ecomotive Solutions, HVM, Ham Italy as well as RFI and Trenitalia.

This activity is part of the Memorandum agreement signed in March 2019 by FS Italiane, Snam and Hitachi Rail with the aim of transforming a part of the current fleet of the FS Italiane Foundation. The Rimini pilot project represents a first step to eliminate particles emissions and to reduce of about 20% CO2 emissions, that thanks to bio-methane, will be zeroed. The diesel rail cars converted to LNG and Bio-LNG were presented in Bologna on October 6th, as part of the LNG Conference. An excellent example of industrial synergy for the decarbonisation of rail transportation, underlines Mr. Gavagnin, coordinator of the LNG Conference. In 2022, the first commercial journey of the renewed rail cars on the Sulmona - Carpinone line, the first Italian tourist railway in terms of number of travelers, is expected.
